Rebuilding teeth and hiding tooth discoloration with dental crowns, porcelain veneers, and dental bonding.
Dental history:
When looking at this smile it is easy to identify various deficiencies, both cosmetic and structural, that must detract from the overall appearance of this person's face. While we don't know specifics, almost certainly the tooth discoloration and damage you see stems from defects that formed when the teeth were initially developing. We would not think that all of these dental problems have been caused simply by dental neglect. The tip off is that the various defects that are present are similar in size, shape, and position on corresponding left and right teeth. Bilaterally symmetrical defects would be characteristic for a dental developmental abnormality.
Cosmetic dentistry treatment plan:
The changes we have illustrated for rebuilding this person's upper teeth could be made by placing a combination of both dental crowns and porcelain veneers. Dental crowns would be needed for those teeth that have large portions of tooth structure missing. Porcelain veneers might suffice for those teeth that are basically intact but have a poor cosmetic appearance.
The changes we have shown for rebuilding the lower teeth could probably be accomplished by placing white dental fillings (dental bonding). In our smile makeover simulations we won't illustrate changes that require orthodontic treatment. However, and especially in the case of this person's lower teeth, braces could be used to idealize and perfect their smile.
Additional notes:
Dental crowns are cemented into place over teeth whereas porcelain veneers are bonded on to the front surface of a tooth. Some types of dental developmental abnormalities alter the structure of a tooth's enamel. This type of situation can dictate that dental crowns must be placed instead of porcelain veneers because the veneer cannot be predictably bonded to the tooth's enamel.
